Piping systems are mainly used in industrial factories as a means of transporting fluids from one point to another. While describing its use is easy, building an efficient web of pipelines is not easy for a lot of calculations and considerations must be factored in. For this reason, engineers diligently study pipe laying for even a small damage can turn into big losses for the company.
Learning the piping system process
Industrial engineers have been taught about building pipe systems from concept to construction. However, they can still take short courses on the piping system process for better understanding. Aside from the procedure of building pipes, the principles and calculations behind it are discussed as well.
From this course, engineers can also learn about choosing the right pipelines, pump operation and troubleshooting tips. The short course can be as long as two months and it is comprised of lectures, tests and practical examinations.
Of diagrams and pipes: the piping system process
Even before the piping system process is executed, engineers have to create a diagram for the entire network of pipelines. They can create either a Process Flow Diagram or the Process and Instrument Diagram. The Process Flow Diagram shows the flow of the pipeline system while the Process and Instrument diagram gives a graphic replica of the system itself.
The diagram would go on a deliberation process and it will be constructed once the operational issues have been ironed out and the calculations have been perfected. From here, pipeline engineers can determine the right pipes to use. Piping devices have five main classifications: fittings, flanges, gaskets, supports and valves.
Fittings are bent in angles and they are used to alter the direction of the fluid. Meanwhile, flanges are usually attached at the ends of each pipe and these are often circular in shape. Flanges have smaller circles within its circumference wherein the attaching bolts can be placed. To seal the pipes together, gaskets are placed between the flanges.
Pipe supports are placed to absorb the weight of the pipes and to prevent explosions that might be caused by thermal expansion. Valves make sure that the pipes can withstand extreme temperatures and avoid corrosion.
